Columbus Bodhi Double India Pale Ale is a highly sought after beer! I know this because my good buddy in Ohio, Dave Coulter, tells me so. Dave knows his beer and if he says its good, then its good. He went to the trouble of scoring an extra bottle for me, and he has sent me Columbus IPA in the past, which is a truly killer example of the style. So now, a double IPA from Columbus. Thanks Dave!
The hype must have indeed been great for this beer, because the brewery held a release party for it. Tickets were $100 each, but that got you a case (24 bottles) of the beer, a pint glass, a T-Shirt and a couple of draft beers among other things.
Columbus says about the beer on their website:
An awakening of the senses by virtue of American hops. Pale golden in color, this double IPA showcases a unique blend of hops, highlighting the true nature of Citra®.
Columbus Bodhi Double India Pale Ale has an alcohol content of 8.3% by volume with 80 IBUs. My bottle was packaged on August 8th of 2016; I drank it on October 3rd. Bodhi, of course, is a Buddhist term that means “awakened”. Bodhi the beer will certainly awaken your taste buds.
Columbus Bodhi Double India Pale Ale pours to a bright orange color with a thick creamy head of foam and a full rich nose of earthy oregano spice and citrus fruit. Taking a sip, the beer has a solid caramel maltiness up front with luscious classic grapefruit pulp and bitter rind flavors. The latter come out especially in the very long, very dry finish. There are earthy herbal oregano notes here too, but mostly bright shiny citrus explodes in all its glory/
What a wonderful beer! Columbus is extremely adept at showcasing hops, and they do that so well with Citras here. If you can get Columbus Bodhi in your area, you sure as heck better. It’s a great double IPA. Hey, I told you Dave knows his beer.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
