OK, here’s the last of the beers I brought back from Rhode Island last fall: Jack’s Abbey Leisure Time Wheat Lager with Spices. For your reference, this beer is about six months old. Spices, though (like hops), are a natural preservative, and since this beer has also been refrigerated most of that time, it’s held up quite nicely.
Leisure time is a year-round offering from Jack’s Abbey, one of their lighter brews, too. Obviously it’s a lager (most wheat beers are ales), though wheat lagers are certainly not unheard of. Jack’s Abbey doen’t do ales, though, which sets them apart from the pack; there are few lager-only breweries in the United States.
From the website:
Leisure Time uses locally sourced ingredients to create a beer worth kicking your feet up with. Leisure Time is brewed with wheat and a blend of spices including lemongrass, coriander, orange peel, and chamomile. A subtle spiciness balances the citrusy and floral hops added to the whirl and hopback. Hop in your comfy armchair and enjoy!
Jack’s Abbey Leisure Time Wheat Lager with Spices has an alcohol content of 4.8% by volume with 15 IBUs. It was running $9.99 a six-pack when I bought my bottle.
Jack’s Abbey Leisure Time Wheat Lager with Spices pours to a hazy yellow color with a medium sized and short-lived spritzy head and a spicy nose of citrus and chamomile. Taking a sip, the beer has a light crackery wheat body at first with vibrant citrus, pungent coriander and floral chamomile all coming to the fore. The latter adds a soft vanilla note right before the tart wheat finish that I particularly enjoyed.
Jack’s Abbey Leisure Time Wheat Lager with Spices is a tasty spiced brew that is smooth and drinkable and very welcome indeed on a warm spring or summer day. It’s just the thing when you need a refreshment that will pick you up and spice things up, too. Perhaps in place of a cup of chamomile tea at bedtime?
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
