Guest Video Review by Tom The Beer Whisperer
Hey there, dear reader! You and I have something in common. My mother and your mother are both mothers! OK, that’s an old Three Stooges line, but it’s still true. My mother, who sadly passed away several years ago, loved a beer now and then. I think she would have enjoyed some of the beers made by Mother’s Brewing of Springfield, Missouri. I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t have enjoyed Mother’s Doozy Double IPA though.
Mom wasn’t a fan of really big hoppy beers, but I am, and so I really enjoyed this one. I even sat on it for about six months, allowing it to age and develop before drinking it. Mother’s beers are not sold in Georgia, mind you, so I should mention that I got a bottle courtesy of our own Tom The Beer Whisperer in a beer trade.
Mother’s Doozy Double IPA is a formidable brew of 9% alcohol by volume and 80 IBUs. It’s sold on draft and in 4-packs of 12-ounce bottles. Mother’s says about the beer on the label:
Big and hoppy and pleasantly bitter, Doozy is a Double IPA crafted for hop lovers by hop lovers. At every stage of the brewing process, we saw another chance to add more coveted Citra hops. The result is a medium-bodied, deep-golden beer that's knock you back bold from start to finish. Did we mention the hops?
Doozy Double IPA is released each May, so as I type it will hit store shelves in no time for 2014.
Mother’s Doozy Double IPA pours to a brilliant orange color with a thick creamy head formation and a wonderfully appetizing nose of Sugar Daddy lollipops, passion fruit and-coconut? Taking a sip the beer has some thick chewy malt at the fore followed by juicy-fruit bubblegum, pungent resin, citrusy grapefruit, and at the last some very grassy aromas. The grassiness intensifies into the long, dry finish that has a big alcohol warmth and lots of lingering bitterness to boot.
I’ve been sitting on this one for a while and it’s magnificent with a little age. If you’re looking for lots of hops, big chewy caramel and some other interesting flavors, this is the beer for you. Just for fun, why not age some for a year or so? This one will certainly stand that test. Mine did with flying colors.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
