American IPA! What the hell is that? Well, today it’s what we used to call West Coast IPA in the 90s, though today what used to be called West Coast IPA is sometimes called East Coast IPA these days. We had that too in the 90s, though then it was more like traditional British IPA. West Coast IPA today is more often than not thin malty and fruit loopy, while American IPA uses classic Pacific Northwest hops like Cascades and Chinooks and is maltier and more citric.
So, a lot of IPA diversity these days, and likely in 5 years the American IPA nomenclature might morph again. To my taste, I’ve always appreciated the classic British style IPAs, but I’ll confess that American IPAs with their chewy caramel malt and robust citrus and resin hops won me over bigtime in the 90s. Hence, Odd 13 Codename Superfan India Pale Ale, what I’m drinking currently.
From the can label:
Codename: Superfan is a deliciously modern take on the American IPA style, brewed with a variety of juicy American hops from the Pacific Northwest.
Ingredients from the website:
Fermentables: Rahr 2-Row, Flaked Wheat, Weyermann Carafoam
Hops: Simcoe, Citra, Amarillo, Equinox
Odd 13 Codename Superfan India Pale Ale has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume with 80 IBUs. It’s a year-round offering. My can was packaged on 7/12/16 and I drank it on August 28th while toasting the memory of The Beer Hunter Michael Jackson. A big thanks to Dale Roberts for this one!
Odd 13 Codename Superfan India Pale Ale pours to a hazy yellow color with a thick fluffy head and a vibrant nose of grapefruit and resin. Taking a sip, the beer has a medium to light maltiness up front followed by tons of citric, juicy, massive grapefruit pulp and rind flavor. It all leads into a long dry lingering bitter pith and rind (and slightly herbal) bitterness. Really, the beer is amazingly bitter.
An excellent classic American IPA, and a beer I really enjoyed. Have I had a beer I didn’t like from Odd 13? I certainly have not.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
