I’ve been to
Rock Bottom….I haven’t been to Rock Bottom. I’ve been to…..aw heck. You see,
I’ve been to the Rock Bottom Brewery. I’ve just never been to the Rock
Bottom Rock Bottom Brewery. Are you confused yet? Don’t feel bad if you
are; this is a confusing story.
True, though. Because there’s a Rock Bottom Brewery in Atlanta’s Buckhead region. They use the Rock Bottom logo, have a Rock Bottom mug club, serve Rock Bottom beers, but, well, they’re not owned by the Rock Bottom chain. They’re owned by the Gordon Biersch restaurant group of Chattanooga, Tennessee (which is, by the way, separate from the Gordon Biersch Brewery that bottles GB beers. But that’s another story.)
This explains why, if you go to the Rock Bottom website, you won’t see the Atlanta location mentioned. Recently, though, a friend of mine was out in Denver and dropped b y a Rock Bottom Rock Bottom. While he was there, he picked up a 22 ounce bottle of Falcon Pale Ale for me.
So, I got to go to Rock Bottom-without, you know, really going to Rock Bottom. Because I got to drink fresh brewpub beer even though I never stepped foot in the brewery.
Rock Bottom Falcon Pale Ale pours to an orange amber color with a moderate creamy head and a light fruity citric nose. The beer is medium bodied with a nutty toasty malt palate, hints of caramel and chocolate. The beer finishes with a little citric fruit and a wonderfully grassy, herbal hop character.
From my point of view, there isn’t a lot of hop bitterness here, though a slight bitter buzz rests on the tongue for a bit after sipping. But this isn’t over the top by any means. It is very drinkable though with plenty of flavor.
Some states allow brewpubs and breweries to sell fresh beer in growlers and bottles on premise; Colorado is one of them. It’s really a treat to enjoy a few brews at the pub and then be able to take some home to enjoy just as fresh days later.
If you happen to be in the Denver area, why not stop by and enjoy a pint. Bring a bottle or two home, too (for $2.95 it’s a deal). And then you can say…I’ve been to Rock Bottom…I’ve been to Rock Bottom.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
